A pedestrian died after being hit by a car on the A38 near Brent Knoll early on Saturday 29 August, and the road that shut for around eight hours was one of the main routes used by passengers travelling to and from Bristol Airport.
Avon and Somerset Police said officers were called by the ambulance service at 5.20am to a collision involving a pedestrian and a white Vauxhall Astra. "Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the pedestrian, a man in his 40s, died at the scene," a police spokesperson said in an official statement. "His family have been updated and our thoughts are with them." The driver of the car remained at the scene and has assisted officers with their enquiries.
The A38 was closed in both directions between the Fox and Goose pub and the Edithmead roundabout, close to junction 22 of the M5, while the scene was investigated. Bristol Airport had earlier told passengers to allow extra time for their journeys and use alternative routes, since the closure blocked a direct approach from the M5 and North Somerset used by many travellers driving to the terminal.
Somerset Live, which ran a live blog on the incident through the morning, reported that police confirmed the road had reopened by around 1.09pm. Police are now appealing for witnesses, asking anyone with information to call 101 and quote reference number 5226248501.
No further details on the circumstances of the collision have been released while the investigation continues.
