Dropping a passenger at Bristol Airport's terminal car park costs £8.50 for up to 10 minutes, making it joint third most expensive in the UK, according to RAC research published on 23 July.

The RAC said 16 of the UK's 20 busiest airports raised drop-off charges this year, with the average up £1.70 to £7. Only Gatwick and Stansted charge more than Bristol, at £10. Bristol is level with Edinburgh at £8.50, which the RAC calculated as 85p a minute.

Bristol Airport's own tariff page, checked on 24 August, confirms £8.50 for up to 10 minutes, £10.50 for 10 to 20 minutes, £13 for 20 to 40 minutes and £30 for 40 to 60 minutes, with a two hour maximum stay.

A separate study by Select Car Leasing, published on 14 August and reported by Bristol Live on 17 August, looked at 50 of Europe's busiest airports and found six of the 10 dearest drop-off zones are in the UK, while Paris Charles de Gaulle, Barcelona and Munich charge nothing.

There is a free option at Bristol. The airport lists a Waiting Zone at the Car Rental Centre giving up to one hour free, with a shuttle bus to the terminal. Blue badge holders get 40 minutes for £8.50.

The airport also warns that its internal roads are red routes where stopping is banned, carrying a £100 enforcement charge, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

What to do: use the free Waiting Zone if you can, and compare the alternatives on our /parking/ and /taxis/ pages before you drive.
