A Met Office yellow weather warning for dense fog covering Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire came into force overnight and led to delays for passengers at Bristol Airport on Sunday morning, 1 November.
The warning, issued at 23:18 GMT on Saturday 31 October, covered the whole of South West England together with large parts of Wales, the Midlands, London, the East of England and Yorkshire. It was due to lift by 10am, but the Met Office said fog patches could persist into the afternoon, with visibility down to less than 100 metres in places.
"Fog has developed widely and will persist across many areas into Sunday morning before slowly lifting and clearing," the Met Office said in its warning, adding that bus, train, flight and ferry services "may also be affected."
At Bristol Airport, flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed 14% of Sunday's departures running late by mid-morning, with an average delay of around eight minutes, though no cancellations had been recorded at that point. The airport's live departures board showed several afternoon flights, including Jet2 services to Antalya and Dalaman and easyJet flights to Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, running between one and two hours behind schedule.
Budget airline Ryanair issued a UK-wide notice to passengers on Sunday morning warning that "due to heavy fog, some flights to and from the UK may be delayed today," urging customers to monitor its app for updates, the Mirror reported. Bristol Live, which first reported the local warning, said the fog had swallowed the spire of St Mary Redcliffe church in the city centre.
The fog followed what the Met Office and the Independent described as England's wettest week since October 2024, after Storms Austen and Boelo brought heavy rain and high winds to the country in the preceding week.
There is no indication of a wider suspension of flights at Bristol Airport, and the disruption reported so far has been limited to delays rather than cancellations. Passengers travelling on Sunday should still check their flight status directly with their airline before setting off, particularly if flying in the morning or early afternoon.
