The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for fog covering Bristol and the wider South West, in force from 6pm on Sunday 8 November until 11am on Monday 9 November, with forecasters warning that flights could be delayed or cancelled as visibility falls as low as 50 metres in places.

According to the Met Office's official warning, fog patches will form during Sunday evening and develop overnight, becoming extensive by Monday morning before clearing slowly later in the day. The warning area stretches across a large part of England and Wales, including South West England, where Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset are all listed.

The Mirror reported on Sunday that the Met Office warning covers 85 areas for 17 hours, with forecasters flagging a direct risk to flights alongside possible bus and train disruption. The Met Office advised travellers to check conditions before setting out, leave extra time for journeys, and make sure fog lights are working, while anyone flying should check with their airline before heading to the airport.

As of Sunday afternoon, Bristol Airport's own departure and arrival boards were showing a handful of flights running behind schedule by less than an hour, with no cancellations yet reported. That picture can change quickly once fog becomes dense overnight, as has happened at the airport before: low cloud and poor visibility have previously forced inbound flights to divert to airports more than 100 miles away when conditions closed in with little warning.

Bristol Airport sits around 190 metres above sea level, among the highest major airports in the country, which has historically made it more exposed to fog and low-cloud disruption than lowland airports nearby.

Passengers travelling to or from Bristol Airport on Sunday evening or Monday morning should check their flight status directly with their airline before leaving home, allow extra time for the journey, and be prepared for the possibility of delays, diversions or cancellations if fog becomes dense overnight.

What this means for your journey: if you are driving in, fog can add significant time to the approach roads as well as the terminal queue, so build in a buffer and check our /parking/ page for options that let you arrive without rushing.
