If you're picking someone up from Bristol Airport, the free option is the Waiting Zone next to the Car Rental Centre (postcode BS48 3DW), which gives you up to 60 minutes at no cost before a free shuttle bus takes you to the terminal. After the first hour it's £20 for up to 2 hours, then £20 for each additional hour. If you'd rather drive straight to the terminal doors and grab your passenger quickly, the Drop Off & Pick Up car park on the Transport Interchange starts from £8.50 for the first 10 minutes. You cannot simply pull over and wait on any of the airport's approach roads; that risks an automatic £100 fine. Checked against Bristol Airport's own pages, October 2026.
The free way to wait: the Waiting Zone
The Waiting Zone is Bristol Airport's dedicated, no-cost space for anyone collecting or dropping off a passenger, or just waiting for someone to land. It's located beside the Car Rental Centre, with the postcode BS48 3DW.
| Duration | Price |
|---|---|
| 0-60 minutes | Free |
| 1-2 hours | £20 |
| Each additional hour or part thereafter | £20 |
Toilets and a pay station are on site. Once your passenger is ready, a frequent bus runs between the Waiting Zone and the Transport Interchange, from where it's a short walk to the terminal building via a covered bridge. If you're the one being collected, head to Bus Stop 1 in the Transport Interchange and take the Car Rental Centre bus back out to the Waiting Zone; accessible shuttle buses with wheelchair ramps also run this route, and drivers can point you to the Assistance point once you reach the terminal.
One rule catches people out: vehicle registrations are logged on entry and exit, and there's a no-return policy within 30 minutes. If the same car comes back into the Waiting Zone within half an hour of leaving, it automatically triggers a Parking Charge Notice, separate from the Red Route fines covered below. If you think you'll need to leave and come straight back, it's simpler to stay put for a few extra minutes than risk that.
Temporary note: from 19 October to 18 December 2026, the Waiting Zone is relocated a short distance from its usual spot while refurbishment work takes place, with signage around the site directing drivers to the temporary location (leave the A38 roundabout as normal, follow signs for Silver Zone parking, then take the first left after the Lulsgate House car park). The free hour and the rest of the pricing above don't change during this period; only the exact spot does.
The faster, paid way: Drop Off & Pick Up
If you don't want to wait at all and would rather time your arrival to meet your passenger coming straight out of the terminal, the Drop Off & Pick Up car park on the Transport Interchange is built for exactly that. It's a 3-5 minute walk from the terminal, with prices starting from £8.50 for the first 10 minutes, so it suits a quick collection more than any kind of wait. There's a 2.5m height restriction; taller vehicles, including most minibuses and campervans, need the separate Minibus/Over Height car park instead. If you expect to be longer than 10 minutes, the airport itself recommends either the Short Stay car park or, for a free option, the Waiting Zone.
Why you can't just pull over and wait
Bristol Airport enforces strict "Red Route" no-stopping rules across its entire road network, monitored by number-plate cameras, and the policy explicitly applies "even if picking up or dropping off customers." Stopping anywhere outside a designated car park, even briefly, risks a £100 Parking Charge Notice from VCS (reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days). See our full guide to Red Zone parking fines and how to appeal one if you've already received a notice.
How this differs from "Meet and Greet" and from Uber/Bolt pickup
It's easy to conflate three different things at Bristol Airport that all involve collecting someone:
- The Waiting Zone, covered here, is a free-to-start car park for anyone waiting to collect a passenger who hasn't landed yet or is still coming through arrivals.
- Meet and Greet parking is a separate, paid valet-style service for people who are flying themselves, not collecting someone else; you hand your own car over before you fly and it's brought back to you on return. See our Meet and Greet parking cost guide for how that works and what it costs.
- Uber and Bolt pickups use their own designated rank, separate from both the Waiting Zone and the Drop Off & Pick Up car park. See our Uber and Bolt pickup guide for exactly where that is.
